The 1986 FIFA World Cup was the 13th edition of the quadrennial tournament, but it was Belgium’s seventh appearance at the competition, and their performance in Mexico is one of the best in the history of the national team. The Red Devils had reached the second group stage of the 1982 World Cup after topping the first group stage, eventually getting dumped out following defeats to Poland and the Soviet Union.

However, Belgium went into the 1986 World Cup a better side under manager Guy Thys, finishing third in Group B after a 2-1 loss to hosts Mexico, a 2-2 draw with Paraguay, and a 2-1 victory against Iran. They advanced to the round of 16, where they were drawn against the Soviet Union. It was a repeat of the 1982 clash between both teams, and the Red Devils ran out 4-3 winners after extra time, with both Nico Claesen and Enzo Scifo finding the back of the net to each take their tally in front of goal at the competition to two. Jan Ceulemans opened the scoring for Belgium against Spain in the quarterfinals to continue his fine form in the final third after being among the goals in the last-16, only for an 85th-minute equaliser to force the game into extra-time. None of the sides could score over the course of the next 30 minutes, but Thys’ side emerged victors after winning the subsequent penalties by 5-4.

Belgium met eventual winners Argentina in the semis, and they were undone by a Diego Maradona brace in the second-half. They faced France in the third-place play-off, and while Ceulemans and Claesen each bagged their third goals at the tournament, the French ran out 4-2 winners after extra-time as the match ended 2-2 in regulation time. The fourth-place finish in Mexico was Belgium’s best placement in their World Cup history for 32 years, and it has since been surpassed by the third-place finish in Russia 2018.

USA 1994 was where Belgium made their ninth appearance at the World Cup, and they secured a berth at the quadrennial competition’s 15th edition after finishing second in Group 4 of the UEFA qualifying campaign. The Red Devils won seven games, drew once, and lost twice to finish behind Romania, and they were drawn in Group F of the World Cup finals alongside the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, and Morocco. They were led to the United States by manager Paul Van Himst, with Georges Grün as their skipper.

Belgium started their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 win over the North Africans, thanks to Marc Degryse’s 11th-minute winner. Philippe Albert’s 65th-minute goal helped them record a 1-0 victory over the Dutch, and they lost 1-0 in their last group game against Saudi Arabia. Their return of six points from a possible nine saw them finish third in the group, with Netherlands and Saudi placing first and second, respectively, only due to superior goal differences.

As one of the best third-placed teams, Van Himst’s side met Germany in the round-of-16, suffering a 3-2 defeat, with goals from Georges Grün and Albert not enough to get them through. However, the game was shrouded in controversy as Swiss referee Kurt Röthlisberger failed to award Belgium a spot kick after Josip Weber was brought down with a bump from behind by German centre-back Thomas Helmer. The mistake led to the end of the ref’s World Cup campaign as he was sent home afterwards, but the damage was already done by then. Belgium’s Michel Preud’homme emerged as the best goalkeeper of the tournament for his heroics in goal. The Red Devils had also gotten eliminated in the last-16 during the 1990 World Cup, and a fourth-place finish in 1986 was their best run at the tournament prior to 1994. They have since surpassed that achievement, though, finishing third at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
