Description

This is the fully-customizable short-sleeve home kit for Sweden’s 1989-1992 period.

The 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy was a challenging campaign for Sweden, as they returned to the global stage after missing the 1986 edition. Drawn into Group C alongside Brazil, Costa Rica, and Scotland, the Swedes faced tough opposition. Despite a strong team with notable talents, Sweden’s World Cup journey ended in disappointment as they failed to advance beyond the group stage.

In their opening match against Brazil on June 10, Sweden faced a formidable opponent. Brazil, a perennial football powerhouse, showcased their skill and determination, ultimately securing a 2-1 victory. Despite a late goal by Tomas Brolin, Sweden couldn’t overcome Brazil’s dominance, with Careca netting twice for the South Americans. This loss set the tone for Sweden’s challenging group stage.

Sweden’s second match on June 16 against Scotland offered a glimmer of hope. However, the Scots proved to be resilient opponents. An early goal by Stuart McCall put Scotland ahead, and although Sweden managed to equalize through a late strike by Glenn Strömberg, a penalty by Mo Johnston sealed a 2-1 victory for Scotland. This second consecutive loss placed Sweden in a precarious position, needing a win in their final match to have any chance of progressing.

On June 20, Sweden faced Costa Rica in a do-or-die encounter. The match began with promise as Johnny Ekström put Sweden ahead in the first half. However, Costa Rica mounted a spirited comeback with goals from Róger Flores and Hernán Medford, resulting in a 2-1 victory for the Central Americans. This defeat was particularly bitter for Sweden as it marked their third consecutive 2-1 loss in the tournament, a unique and unfortunate record in World Cup history.

Sweden’s campaign in the 1990 World Cup was marked by moments of promise but ultimately ended in heartbreak. Despite the individual talents and efforts of players like Tomas Brolin, Glenn Strömberg, and Johnny Ekström, the team couldn’t convert their potential into victories. The three losses underscored the competitive nature of their group and highlighted areas for improvement in Swedish football.

Notable Players: Glenn Hysén, Peter Larsson, Roland Nilsson, Stefan Schwarz, Anders Limpar, Jonas Thern, Klas Ingesson, Joakim Nilsson, Glenn Strömberg, Tomas Brolin, Johnny Ekström, Mats Magnusson, Stefan Pettersson, Roger Ljung, Mats Gren.
