This is the fully-customizable short-sleeve home kit Borussia Dortmund wore in Europe for the 2001-2002 season.
Winning a domestic league is always a big feat. However, if you win Bundesliga with a point ahead of Bayer Leverkusen and two in front of Bayern Munich – well that’s an achievement.
The BVB managed to do so, ending up with 70 points at the top. Tomas Rosicky and Jan Koller were the key members of the squad, along with Jens Lehmann and Marcio Amoroso, who scored 18 goals that season. They also reached the Europe Cup final where they lost to Feyenoord, even though they’d almost made a comeback after going 3-0 down as the match ended 3-2 for the Dutch.
However, this kit was worn in their quest for European glory. And they were extremely close to winning their second European Cup after their 1996-1997 feat. The Borussen started the season in the European Cup, but some poor performances in the group stage, along with some extreme bad luck, sent them into the Europe Cup. They subsequently beat every single team they met in the knockout stage, from Copenhagen, Lille, Slovan Liberec, and finally the great AC Milan. They went in the final as favorites against Feyenoord Rotterdam. However, a Kohler red card in the 31st minute made things extremely complicated for the team wearing this shirt. The match opened up, and Feyenoord was 2-0 up in the 40th minute. However, a Marco Amoroso goal right after half-time brought some hope back, while Feyenoord scored again to make it 3-1 in the 50th. Jan Koller scored again in the 58th to bring some hope once again, but the score remained the same and the Borussen missed on their second European trophy in a very dramatic manner.
