Euro 1996 was the Czech Republic’s first international competition following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, and they took everyone by storm, reaching the final of the tournament.

England hosted the 1996 Euro Championship – the quadrennial tournament’s 10th edition – but it was Dušan Uhrin-led Czech that caught the eyes with their brilliant performances, finishing second in Group C after a 2-0 loss to eventual group leaders and winners Germany, a 2-1 win against Italy (with goals from Pavel Nedvěd and Radek Bejbl) and an exhilarating 3-3 draw with Russia (with goals from Jan Suchopárek, Pavel Kuka and Vladimír Šmicer). They advanced to the quarterfinals as a result, and Karel Poborsky’s second-half strike was enough to hand them a famous 1-0 win over Portugal.

Czech met France in the semis, and they held Aimé Jacquet’s side to a goalless draw after 90 minutes, and with neither side able to find a goal in extra-time, the game went into penalties. Both sides scored each of their first five attempts, and the proceeding went into sudden death. Reynald Pedros missed the French team’s sixth attempt while Miroslav Kadlec converted his spot-kick to send Uhrin’s men into the finals.

Euro 1992 runners-up Germany stood between Czech and a first-ever international silverware, but they appeared to be on their way to glory after Patrik Berger converted from the spot in the 59th minute at Wembley Stadium. However, Berti Vogts’ side continued to fight and eventually drew themselves level via Oliver Bierhoff in the 73rd minute. The game went into extra-time after neither team could find a winner in regulation time, and Bierhoff broke Czech’s heart with another goal five minutes into the first-half of the 30 minutes. They have taken part in every European Championship since then, with a place in the semi-finals in 2004 their best effort so far after their 1996 heroics.
