Germany headed into Euro 2004 on the back of a disappointing Euro 2000 campaign, where they had failed to make it out of the group stage, and a heartbreaking 2002 World Cup, where they had lost the final to Brazil. Portugal hosted the European Championship in 2004 – the 12th edition of the quadrennial tournament – and Germany found themselves drawn in Group D alongside the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Latvia. It was Die Mannschaft’s ninth appearance at the competition, and they were led by manager Rudi Völler and captained by legendary goalkeeper Oliver Kahn. The Germans started the group campaign with a 1-1 draw with the Dutch, with Ruud van Nistelrooy’s 81st-minute equaliser cancelling out Torsten Frings’ 30th-minute opener.

A goalless draw with Latvia left Voller’s side on the brink of elimination, and while Michael Ballack put them ahead 21 minutes into their last group game against a second-string Czech side, goals from Marek Heinz and Milan Baroš condemned them to defeat and a third-place finish in the group. It was yet another underwhelming European Championship for the Germans, and it led to Völler’s resignation.

Many had tipped Germany to do well after the group draws were held having topped their qualifying group, winning five games (away at Lithuania, at home and away against the Faroe Islands, at home against both Scotland and Iceland) and drawing the other three (at home against Lithuania, away at Scotland and Iceland). However, they failed to live up to expectations and their Euro 2004 campaign will go down as one of the worst in Die Mannschaft’s history. Things have since improved as they have made it out of the group stages at subsequent European Championships, reaching one final, two semifinals, and one round-of-16 stage. Germany are the joint-most successful team in the Euros with three titles (1972, 1980 and 1996).
