Description

This is the fully-customizable short-sleeve away kit for the Germany 2010 World Cup

Germany made their 15th World Cup appearance at the 17th edition of the quadrennial competition in Korea/Japan in 2002, and they were in search of their fourth title having last won it in 1990. Die Mannschaft finished second in their qualifying group behind England to pick up the World Cup ticket following five wins, two draws, and a loss, and they were drawn alongside the Republic of Ireland, Cameroon, and Saudi Arabia in Group E of the tournament. Rudi Völler was in charge of the team, with legendary goalkeeper Oliver Kahn as the skipper.

An 8-0 demolition of Saudi saw Germany start their World Cup campaign on the brightest of notes, with Miroslav Klose grabbing a hat-trick, while Michael Ballack, Carsten Jancker, Thomas Linke, Oliver Bierhoff, and Bernd Schneider also got on the scoresheet. Germany were held to a 1-1 draw by the Irish, with Robbie Keane’s 92nd-minute goal cancelling out Klose’s 19th-minute opener. They ended the group campaign with a 2-0 win over Cameroon, with Marco Bode and Klose both scoring in the second-half. The game entered into the record books for producing 16 yellow cards – the most in a World Cup game (eventually equaled in 2006 during the last-16 clash between the Netherlands and Portugal) – including one second booking for each side.

The Germans faced Paraguay in the round-of-16 for winning their group, and Oliver Neuville’s strike in the 88th minute handed them victory. Ballack’s first-half goal against the United States in the quarter-finals won the game for Die Mannschaft,
but the North Americans felt hard done by after the referee refused to award them a penalty when Torsten Frings appeared to hand the ball on the goal-line five minutes into the second-half. Another lone goal, thanks to Ballack’s third strike of the campaign, saw Germany eliminate one of the hosts, South Korea, in the semis.

However, the influential midfielder got ruled out of the final against Brazil after picking up his third yellow card of the tournament against the Koreans, and it proved very costly as Voller was already without creative midfield duo Mehmet Scholl and Sebastian Deisler before the competition started through injury. A second-half brace from the competition’s highest goalscorer, Ronaldo, condemned Germany to a heartbreaking defeat, but Kahn emerged with the best player and best goalkeeper awards for his outstanding individual performances.

Notable Players: Miroslav Klose, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Philipp Lahm, Thomas Müller, Lukas Podolski, Mesut Özil, Sami Khedira, Mario Gomez, Toni Kroos, Holger Badstuber, Arne Friedrich, Per Mertesacker
